40.1 Sleep is necessary to store information in the subconscious mind

During daily functioning, we undergo a lot of impressions and feelings. We must be able to vent these in sleep, otherwise our material body would collapse.
When we go to sleep, we gradually lay down our daytime consciousness and become less and less aware of our surroundings until we are deep asleep.
During deep sleep, daytime experiences sink into our subconscious. There these feelings are added to the huge reservoir of all our experiences from all our lives, which we call the subconscious.
When we are awake and thinking consciously we cannot let go of impressions and experiences and hold them. The letting go and sinking of our experiences can only happen during sleep. Our personality is then asleep and only then can it release these experiences.

-The first three grades of your sleep serve as pre-sleep. You are not yet asleep, because you must still cross the threshold of the fourth grade.

-When ready, your conscious- ness descends into your inner life and your material body experiences sleep.
The human body and its inner life are profound; both are powerful, one is dependent on the other; although inner life dominates the mate- rial organism on earth in everything. It directs, guides and keeps it intact, as the material organism lives through our inner life.

The Origin of the Universe p.190 (OR.5046.5048)

-If the human being cannot let off steam in his sleep, then the physical material system succumbs, that clock then runs unrelentingly fast. It now gets too much to deal with and that is not possible!

Spiritual Gifts p.397 (SP.9783.9784)

-I repeat, the soul must let off steam during sleep, or the material body would succumb. Nature takes care of it! At the age of one the child would already succumb, since the soul life could no longer bear the experiences gained.
